Introducing our exquisite Afghan rug, carefully crafted by ethnic Turkmen weavers, mostly from the Esari subtribe. This rug showcases the tribal design style known as Ersari, originating from Afghanistan. Its rustic background in a rich rust shade beautifully complements the navy border, while the main color of the rug is a vibrant red.
This particular rug measures 3'10" x 6'4", making it a perfect size for various living spaces. Crafted with attention to detail, it consists of wool on a cotton foundation, ensuring a high-quality and durable construction. The wool used in this rug is sourced from the Ghazni Province in Southeast Afghanistan, known for its mountainous terrain and woolly sheep, resulting in longer staple, oily, and superior-quality wool specifically for carpet weaving.
To produce this stunning rug, the raw Ghazni wool is transported to the western side of Afghanistan, specifically around Herat. There, it is hand-carded and hand-spun into carpet yarn, meticulously prepared for weaving. The weaving process takes place on traditional floor looms in the weavers' homes, embodying a cottage industry type of production.
Using an asymmetrical "Persian" knot type and a cotton warp and weft, this rug showcases the expertise and skills of the Afghan weavers. The double wefting and heavily packed, depressed warp weaving technique result in a remarkably durable and long-lasting handwoven carpet.
What truly sets this rug apart is the use of centuries-old all-natural dye stuffs. The captivating red color in this rug stems from natural madder root dyes. Madder root, scientifically known as Rubia tinctorum, has been cultivated for centuries and holds a significant history as a dyeing agent worldwide. It produces a range of warm and cool red, orange, pink, and brown shades, adding depth and richness to the rug's overall design.
With a knots per square inch (KPSI) count of 80, this rug boasts an impressive level of intricacy and craftsmanship. Through meticulous calculations, we determined that this masterpiece comprises a remarkable 276,293 individually hand-tied knots.
Discover the true essence of Afghan artistry with this one-of-a-kind rug, an heirloom-worthy addition to any space.
