Introducing our exquisite rug, originating from Afghanistan, specifically crafted by ethnic Turkmen weavers, most notably from the Esari Subtribe. This rug showcases the traditional design of Karabagh, highlighting its tribal style. The magnificent background color is a vibrant blue, perfectly complemented by an ivory border.
The material composition of this rug includes a wool pile on a cotton warp and weft, providing a durable and high-quality structure. The wool used in this rug is sourced from sheep in the Ghazni Province of Southeast Afghanistan, where the mountainous terrain fosters the growth of longer staple, oily wool ideal for carpet weaving. The raw Ghazni wool is then transported to the western side of Afghanistan, near Herat, where it undergoes the meticulous process of hand carting and hand spinning to create the carpet yarn.
Crafted by skilled artisans, this rug is woven on traditional floor looms, often within the weavers' own homes or as part of cottage industry production. The weaving technique employed is the asymmetrical "Persian" knot type, renowned for its strength and durability. The weaving process involves a double wefted, heavily packed, depressed warp, resulting in one of the most resilient and long-lasting handwoven carpets in existence.
As with many authentic handwoven rugs, this masterpiece features centuries-old natural dye substances, imbuing the colors with depth, richness, and a unique character. The captivating blue in this rug is derived from natural indigo dye, sourced from the leaves of the indigo plant (indigofera tinctoria). Natural indigo dye has a storied history spanning thousands of years and has been utilized by numerous cultures worldwide to produce striking blue hues.
With a knots per square inch (KPSI) of 80, this rug showcases the remarkable craftsmanship and attention to detail present in each individual hand-tied knot. We have calculated that this rug boasts a staggering total of 1,880,981 meticulously crafted knots, a testament to the skill and dedication of the weaver.
Our Afghani rug showcases the distinct Karabagh design, characterized by its tribal style. Crafted by talented Turkmen weavers using high-quality wool sourced from the Ghazni Province, this rug offers exceptional durability and longevity. The all-natural dyes, particularly the captivating blue derived from the indigo plant, create an eye-catching display of color.
