Description

Introducing our exquisite Afghani rug, known for its large harshang design and tribal style. This rug originates from Afghanistan, specifically the Ghazni Province, which boasts mountainous terrain known for producing high-quality wool. The wool used in this rug comes from sheep in the region, providing a longer staple and oilier texture ideal for carpet weaving.

The craftsmanship of this rug is truly remarkable. Ethnic Turkmen weavers, mainly from the Esari Subtribe, bring the raw Ghazni wool to the western side of Afghanistan, near Herat. Here, the wool is meticulously hand carted and spun into carpet yarn, ready for weaving. The weaving process takes place on traditional floor looms, often in the weavers' own homes, capturing the essence of a cottage industry.

With an asymmetrical "Persian" knot type and a cotton warp and weft, this rug exemplifies durability and longevity. Thanks to its double wefted and heavily packed depressed warp weaving technique, it stands as one of the most resilient handwoven carpets available today.

Adding to its allure is the use of all-natural dye stuffs, with centuries-old techniques infusing vibrant colors into each thread. The background of this rug showcases a rich navy, complemented by a sage border. However, it is the stunning blue main color that truly captivates the eye. This deep blue is achieved through the use of natural indigo dye, derived from the leaves of the indigo plant (indigofera tinctoria). Renowned for its history dating back thousands of years, natural indigo dye has been employed by various cultures worldwide to create brilliant blue hues.

Measuring at 6'0" x 9'0", this rug features a knot density of 80 knots per square inch (KPSI). Through careful calculation, we estimate that a total of 614,556 individually hand-tied knots makes up this extraordinary piece.

Immerse yourself in the rich history and exceptional craftsmanship of this Afghani rug. Its unique design and meticulous construction make it a testament to the unrivaled skill of Afghan weavers.
